I've just tried this Internet device, HUAWEI E1692 with Linux Ubuntu Jaunty, and basically everything worked out fine smoothly. The Internet connection can be established either with the NetworkManager Gnome applet, or using the application that comes with the device. Linux is officially supported with the provided drivers, and basically the installation works fine, thought the instructions provided are not completely correct...As for the installation, you need to insert the usb device, and the first time, it is recognized as a USB memory storage; you can then access the data stored in the device, where you find a folder with the drivers and the installation script.
Since the installation requires root privileges it is required to run the install script in the Linux folder using the terminal:
cd /media/Alice\ MOBILE\ HW/Linux
sudo ./install
As suggested in this thread, it is better to specify the installation path, even though you're OK with the default one, by simply inserting the full path. The installation should then succeed
Now, you should be able to setup a connection with NetworkManager applet (actually I had another connection setup for the same operator, thus I could simply reused that one).
Now, an icon should be put in your desktop to use the application that ships with the device; however, I couldn't connect using that application link, probably because the application requires root privileges... but it works fine if I start it from a terminal
cd /usr/local/Alice_MOBILE_E1692/
sudo ./MobilePartner
and then you should be able to connect
The nice thing of this application is that you can keep track of your traffic
and you can send SMSs and access your addressbook

Non capisco questa mania di postare in inglese.. non è che sei più figo se posti in inglese, fa solo in modo che uno che non lo sa (e non sono pochi) non possa trarre beneficio dal tuo post.
Tra l'altro non è che spieghi cose così complicate, direi che sono rivolte ad un pubblico che molto probabilmente l'inglese lo conosce solo coi cognomi dei calciatori.
E in più la chiavetta di cui parli è della tim. Direi che la comunità linux non ha bisogno di un nuovo contributo in inglese, specialmente se parla di un prodotto consumato più che altro da italiani.
Tutto questo non fa certamente bene alla diffusione del pinguino, come se volessi mantenerlo "elitario", cosa che tra l'altro è antitetico alla filosofia di Ubuntu (che utilizzi secondo il tuo post)

Del resto riporto le mie esperienze: se avessi voluto "spiegare" avrei postato nel forum Italiano.
Peraltro, la mia esperienza mi e' sembrata piu' semplice di quella che ho trovato in vecchi post, quindi un minimo di valore aggiunto lo porta sempre. Se invece la comunita' non ne ha bisogno puo' tranquillamente ignorare il mio post.
Se poi uno che legge il post e' Italiano, e non conosce l'Inglese, non ha che da chiedere e sono piu' che felice di spiegare cose in Italiano, figuriamoci! :-)

Just got this internet key, took it home and realised that the mupppets did not include the SD memory. I have an SD 1gb already, so if anyone would be kind enough, please could they direct me to the TIM files that should come with it.

I was recently in Italy and while I was there I bought a Tim cash internet. It was delivered with a Huawei E1692 modem and on the box it said that it should work with Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu netboox remix 9.10 on a Acer aspire one. When I insert the modem nothing happens and when I look in the "files and folders" it doesn't show up at all. The modem works just fine on a windows computer. Any ideas on what to do.

Jon what do you mean by the SD memory? The files for installation are in the key which can be read as a disk volume...
[with ubuntu 10.04] i confirm that root privileges are unecessary to launch the Tim application (java based), and there are good reasons to don't do it. There is a (severe?) bug in the application itself while compiz is running. Try to write in a terminal "metacity --replace", it will disable compiz and you will see the application correctly.
